Some additional patent information - sorry it is USA-centric.
The first USA sets in 1962 did not list any patents on the boxes. Around
1963-64 Samsonite started printing the two USA patents Gary referenced above on
many USA Samsonite boxes. At a later date (probably 1966-67) Samsonite started
listing six additional patents on boxes for a total of eight. For many of the
early sets the box can be dated this way.
The following USA patent information was found in earlier lugnet posts and I've
added a little detail.
Here are some of the earlier patents (first 8 are the ones printed on boxes):
US Patents Reference
3005282 - Oct 24, 1961 - 2x4 brick
3034254 - May 15, 1962 - sloped roof brick
3162973 - Dec 29, 1964 - weird version of brick (unused?)
3224043 - Dec 21, 1965 - injection molding machine
3234683 - Feb 15, 1966 - wheel and wheel brick
3236004 - Feb 22, 1966 - 4x4 round turntable
3242610 - Mar 29, 1966 - flexible towbar
3284946 - Nov 15, 1966 - weird version of window (unused?)
3461601 - Aug 19, 1969 - samsonite gear
3464624 - Sep 2, 1969 - non-electrical train track
3475851 - Nov 4, 1969 - "crane truck" older winch w/ crossbars
3583631 - June 8, 1971 - electric train track

You can look up the USA patents (get pictures, details) here:

The files can be saved to your computer and/or printed.
Have fun,

| (...) PAT PEND was found on Lego bricks and parts from 1958 until the mid-to-late 1960's. 1958 was the year that TLG introduced the "binding brick" with tubes underneath. There were other patents issued for such things as sloped bricks and Lego (...) (20 years ago, 16-Mar-05, to lugnet.parts)
