PAT PEND was found on Lego bricks and parts from 1958 until the mid-to-late
1960's. 1958 was the year that TLG introduced the "binding brick" with tubes
underneath. There were other patents issued for such things as sloped bricks
and Lego wheels.
Since I am no patent expert, I can only assume that it takes some time for
patents to be issued, hence the PAT PEND.
After TLG removed PAT PEND in the 60's, many Lego molds were re-tooled to remove
the PAT PEND. By doing this, the new bricks came out with a mound on either
side of the tubes where the PAT and PEND used to be. There must have been a lot
of molds that were re-tooled, since bricks with these mounds are pretty common.
During the PAT PEND era, Lego bricks were sold in red, white, blue, yellow,
black and clear. Also starting in 1962, small plates were sold with PAT PEND in
red, white, blue, yellow, black, clear, gray, and (USA/Canada only) green. Also
Lego sloped bricks were only found in red and blue during that era.
Besides bricks and plates, few Lego pieces have PAT PEND. Here is a 1963-65
Architectural Set #751 with the patents listed on the box. Since this set
contains ONLY bricks and plates, all patents are in reference to these parts.
Here they are:
ARGENTINA Pat. No. 116,644
AUSTRALIA Austr. Pat. 229,550
AUSTRIA Pat. No. 211,715

ITALY Pat. No. 591,313
MORROCCO Brevete S.G.D.G. 10,998
SWITZERLAND Pat. No. 362,354
TURKEY Pat. No. 9,708
SOUTH AFRICA Patented 39/59

VENEZUELA Pat. No. 11,734
WEST GERMANY DBP No. 1,076,007 1,120,335
Other Countries Pat. Pend.
Hope that takes some of the mystery out of PAT PEND.
