I have been meaning to post dimensions and materials for quite some time
now, but I have just not gotten around to it.  They are made of poplar wood
(nominal 1x2s; .75"x1.5") held together with wood glue and 1.25" wood
screws.  They stack and are nest-able side by side and are useable from
either side.

Tom, If you don't mind could you supply some more measurements and any other
information that would be helpfull in building one.
Thanks
Mark

I liked Tom's bin rack idea, but it was the stacks of _buckets_ that I kept
tipping over.  So I built a rack to hold them.  The rack holds a total of 24
buckets, each of which can be slid into its own cubby without disturbing any
of the others in the stack.

The loaded rack is very stable.  I can tip it at least fifteen degrees
forward without any buckets falling out, and when released from this
position, the rack rights itself without catastrophe.

I built the cubbys tall enough that the buckets can still have their lids on
them when stored.  I could have compressed it vertically a bit if I left the
lids off, but I wouldn't have gotten a ninth bucket in the stack anyway; I
have 7.5' ceilings in my house.

The rack is built from 1"x2" premium pine (an oxymoron if ever there was)
cut to aprox. 9" lengths.  These short lengths were nailed onto 7'3"
uprights in a ladder configuration, and then I attached the ladders together
by connecting longer lengths across the back using countersunk wood screws.
In true AFOL fashion, I did not use any glue.

Note that the inside uprights have rungs attached to both sides; the outer
ones don't.  I actually used a pair of the short ladder rung pieces as
temporary vertical spacers between adjacent rungs while nailing them in
place to achieve consistent spacing.  The bottom-most cubby is slightly
shorter than the rest as it doesn't need to clear a bucket lid beneath it.
The braces across the rear are set at the same height as the ladder rungs to
prevent the buckets from falling out the back.

I think the pictures show enough detail so that you can build one of these
for yourself.  Just be sure to use a miter saw to get nice, clean cuts so
that everything stays square during assembly.  This rack used a total of
sixteen 8-foot lengths of 1"x2" pine IIRC, but you might want to get extra
lumber and/or plan those cuts _very_ carefully.

Also, beware that some styles of LEGO buckets are larger/wider than others,
so make sure you test-fit your buckets into the rack during construction.
This will help to ensure a nice fit so that the buckets slide easily without
binding in their cubbys.  In fact, I "measured" the back braces by standing
the ladders up with buckets between them and then marking a piece of the
brace material with a pencil, so I don't even know the precise length of
those cuts.

The punchline is that just as I was pattimg myself on the back for never
having to pick up a stack of those &@#*%!!! buckets again, I knocked over a
stack of NELUG buckets that I am storing at my house.  I guess I should have
made the rack wide enough to hold 36 buckets instead!

(...) Here is the rack I created (URL) used 1x3's because thats what I had. I love being able to get the bottom bucket out with out moving the whole stack. mark IndyLUG (22 years ago, 12-Dec-02, to lugnet.storage, lugnet.org.us.wamalug)
