This whole thread has been pretty fascinating, seeing shelving built out of

bought a bunch of adjustable shelves from Home Depot, sku 677930 (look for
it at homedepot.com), and recombined them with the exact right spacing for
the blue tubs.  The results are thus:

This solution works well, and is fairly compact.

Yea, that looks really compact. In fact, it looks more compact that the
custom built wood shelves people have been showing (since you get 3 tubs
to a shelf, with very little space between them). My biggest complaint
about shelving systems is the amount of wasted space. What I'd really
love to get to minimize wasted space is tubs with vertical sides. The
sloped sides which allow nesting of empty tubs result in a huge waste.
