Hey all,

I talked with Crispin today and he is very much looking forward to our set up.
Right now April is booked but he said that we could set up our display on
Sunday April 30th if we wanted.  We can do this during store hours which are
from Noon-6pm.  So try and keep that date free.  If you can't make this date
but would still like to include a model let us know and we can work something
out.

Also I have come up with a very simple, almost exactly 16"x16" BURP cliff
section that if we can reproduce it we can use as a facade for the glass
cubes.
I will post pictures soon but basically each section consists of...

35 Gray or DkGray Rectangular Burps.
28 Gray or DkGray 2x2 Bricks
14 Gray or DkGray 1x2 Bricks
5  Gray or DkGray 2x6 Plates
4  1x2 Technic Beams
2  Technic pegs.

I know that the 35 rectangular Burps is a lot but otherwise this is very
simple.  It is 7 rows of 5 Burps stacked on top of each other with each row
offset back 1 stud.  There are 4 2x2 bricks in each row to fill the gaps
between the BURPs and 2 1x2 bricks to serve the same purpose on the ends.  The
Technic beams go on the ends of the 2nd and 7th row on the bottom of the BURP.
The 5 2x6 Plates just fill up the space on the BURP on the top row.

Hopefully that sounds pretty easy.  It ends up being about 15.75" x 16" but
that is pretty good I think.  I unfortunately only have enough for 1 of these
so if you can do one please let us know.

I might be able to do one of these cliff sections -- I found the 6766 Rapid
River set, http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=rapid+river that Eric has
previously recommended on clearance at KB Toy for about $35, so I am now the
proud owner of 10 rectangular BURPs.  (Five in each set.)  It is quite
possible that I will own enough more BURPs by the end of April to build one of
these cliff sections for the display.

Eric, do you have any idea how many cliff sections we'll need for the display?

More importantly, KB also has 6097 Night Lord's Castle,
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=night+lord on 50% clearance, so you
get almost 600 pieces (including _lots_ of grey, some cool doors and windows,
several styles of castle wall BURPs, a few good medieval figs, a witch, and a
black dragon) all for a pittance -- $40.  I picked up a few of these last
weekend and got immediately inspired to start building a castle.  I was going
for something like the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, but I don't have
enough roof tiles (yet!) to do that large of a sloped roof.

I used a large grey 48x48 baseplate with a mere 3-stud margin around the
foundation on all sides.  (That's an outer foundation footprint of about 42
studs square.)  There is a wall with a functional draw-gate that opens into a
small courtyard in front of the castle.  Last night I finished construction on
the third floor of the structure.  I still need a few more parts to get that
plush, royal feel to the upper floors, and I might want to see if I can
replace some of the, er, "more colorful" brick that I was forced to use for
the uppermost floor, but I'm already pretty happy with the way everything fits
together.

It has plenty of catwalks for guards to stand on, and balconies for the king
to issue proclamations from.  I didn't worry about the interior for now, but I
have a general floorplan already in mind for that eventuality...

One somewhat anachronistic detail of the current model is the large wall-o-
glass window that I slapped onto the backside of the second floor when I was
starting to get tired.  (The minifig residents of Whistlestop are still
quaking from my Godzilla-like assault on one of my train cars to scrounge up
all those blue windows!)  I am planning to replace this with a more ornate
entryway into a large ballroom in a near-future remodel job.

I have no idea if there will be room in the TCS window display for this
monstrosity, but I built it anyway, and I'm still having a blast refining the
design.  Another alternative for using this building in the window display
would be to turn it into a barracks/command center for the troops, in case
anybody out there builds an even more spectacular castle for the king.

I won't have my digital camera back for at least another week, so I guess
you'll all have to wait a bit longer to see what this looks like.  But I
promise to post pictures ASAP.

Still, I wanted to let people in the group know that I'm working on this
project, and also alert you all to the clearance items at KB Toy.  In
particular, 6097 is an _excellent_ resource for this kind of modeling!

Now I just need a classy-sounding name for this fine edifice.  Too bad
"Anthrax" is already taken...
