Hello,
I have just decided on my contribution for GATS-02.  This may not float with
other people, but I will try anyway.

I am currently working on a Yard-Automation system, which will use an RCX
brick and a computer (laptop) to fully automate the yard we will be using at
GATS-02.

With my experience on running trains during the GR show I would like to
comment. In the GR show Steve and I managed to isolate track so the train
yard could work independently from the loop. That made it fun because we
hardly touched the trains. The only time we did was to separate them or move
them when we got in a jam. Now the next challenge is to get automated
switches so we don’t have to keep reaching over the display to switch a
track. I think if we get that down then we can take another step. I think
this is a big enough challenge by itself. I think once we get the switch
tracks to work in the display we can tackle something else. Like Scott said
we don’t have somewhere to practice an automated train yard. If we do go to
an automated train yard then we have to start thinking about modular table.
This is so that everything is all set up and wired. See what I mean. I don’t
think we can jump right in and make an automated train yard. God knows I
want an automated train yard just like everyone else but I think we need a
little more experience. Besides I don’t think it would be as much fun with a
computer controlling it. I was having fun controlling the trains. Keep your
ideas flowing so if the issue dose come up to make the train yard automated
then you’ll be ready. Also try things out and let us know how it works. Who
knows your idea may work and we can put it in the show. The other thing to
keep in mind is time and money. I’m not saying your idea is a bad one I’m
saying that I don’t think it’s practical right now.
