Its Carrier heaVer than air (as opposed to blimps). A guy I work with who was
in the navy confirmed the "V". He thought that the "C" might be for Cruiser
because some of the first fleet carriers were converted cruisers (converted due
to the naval treaty after WWI).
Next question (much easier) where did the term "tank" come from.

I think , during WWI or WWII (I forget when the USA started mass producing tanks) the workers at arsenals were told/ thought they were building water tanks to supply the troops on the feilds.
