  Re: Rock Crawling at BrickWorld

(...) We've been talking about this. Rock Crawling offers a couple interesting challenges. The first is to build a Rock Crawling truck, and the second is drive it. The problem is that most of us will be doing a great deal of playing/testing before (...) (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: "The" Course

(...) I agree. (...) Yes - do a higher is better scoring system...I, for one, will be less confused. We can then award bonus points for the design of the vehicle. 4WD, rear steering, and multiple types of suspension points (ie - 2 wheel suspension, (...)   "The" Course

I just had an idea about the Rock Crawling course. I was thinking about how we can make it hard for the good trucks, and possible for the not-so-good trucks. The answer is two courses. But not two separate courses, just two paths for each obstacle. (...) (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

(...) That's because you haven't built a rock crawler and experienced how much fun it is ;) I definitly think this should be an event. The biggest problem I see is finding/bringing things to make a course. John (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) My vehicle does use 4 RC buggy motors. I have a motor drive assembly for each *wheel*. The drive assembly is outside the suspension components so no linkage is required. The vehicle actually uses 2 RC buggy receiver units and steering units so (...) (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

(...) Brian Davis is the competition coordinator for Brickworld's Mindstorms events, so he is the right guy to work with if you have suggestions, desires, ideas, etc. Glad to hear someone is lurking about :) B (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

(...) We're not sure, yet, if Rock Crawling will be on the menu for Brickworld. There will certainly be some robotics events, but we've not finalized a list as yet. Does Rock Crawling sound interesting? (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

So . . . I've been lurking in your club's newsgroup lately and am wondering if this rock crawling challenge will be at BrickWorld for sure. Are there other robotics events planned? (17 years ago, 10-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) At this point, there really aren't limits on LEGO parts. Bryan hasn't posted (publicly) about his robot, but I think he's using the controller from the RC buggy for his, along with four motors. Both John and I have robots that look very much (...) (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) I've now found that as long as I go to my junk mail folder, I can usually find the "authorize post" email. Weird, about 1 time in 5 it gets into my normal inbox, and the rest of the time it ends up sorted into "junk". (...) Yeah, I can see (...) (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

Re: third generation rock crawler & support

(...) That is the exact thought I had the last time I was at your place and saw the alternate model for the semi tow truck sitting there. Nice to know great minds think alike ;) But being short 1 semi-tow truck, I can't do that at the moment. John (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) Well look whose back to being able to post on LUGNET :) As to rotating the motor, that would require either elongating the wheelbase, or raising the NXT up to make room. Neither option is desirable. Raising the NXT puts the COG too high, and (...) (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

Re: third generation rock crawler & support

(...) Brian, This sounds like a good suggestion. How is your rock crawler progressing? :) I actually spent last night working on a transport vehicle for my Rock Crawler. Hopefully, by the end of the week, I'll have an RC hauler that can be used for (...) (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) Very nice! I like the compact rear differential and gearing. I wonder if you could rotate the rear motor 90° so it lays under the chassis, to (very slightly) improve the center of gravity. Very nice looking. What happens if it gets lifted at (...) (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

A beautiful piece of work!! And functional... :) I may have to go back to the drawing board to do the 45 degree incline...I will have to run a test. B (17 years ago, 8-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: third generation rock crawler

(...) Wow! That looks like some serious engineering :) JB (17 years ago, 7-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  third generation rock crawler

I think we need to have another meeting. Mainly so I can test this... (URL) links (URL) suspension or rear steer in this one, but it is 4wd, with both axles linked so all 4 wheels will spin before the motors stall, and it can climb a sanded plywood (...)   NEIRG

It appears Science Central has added this year's First LEGO League challenge to their list of events for Feb 24th. So, for those of us who've been playing around with the idea of building a robot, here's your chance... (URL) (17 years ago, 2-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

(...) That's how they do it in "real" rock crawling. It will be a little different for us, because you don't actually have to "put it into reverse". I think having a penalty for backing up may be good. In the "real" event, there is also a penalty (...) (17 years ago, 2-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)

  Re: Rock Crawling

Steve, I just had a thought on scoring. You mentioned that you wanted to make the course tough enough so a perfect score (no penalties) would be nearly impossible. How about giving a penalty every time someone backed up? I can't remember a single (...) (17 years ago, 2-Jan-07, to lugnet.org.us.laflrc)
