I don't recommend Yard 1 because we need a lot of room. I'd say the
smallest siding must be 6 straight tracks at minimum. Otherwise it won't
hold much at all. The curve won't give us what we need. Plus, Lego Trains
don't look the greatest on Tight curves because they hang over pretty bad.
Moving is ok though...

Some more attempts at the trapezoid shaped yard:

R-Yard3:  Perfect geomety, but the "main" line is composed of all
curves.  Not preferrable or very nice looking.

Agreed. But it would mean not having to cut any track. But doesn't look
very good.

I'd say that Yard 2 or 3 would be best for unmodified track.

For for absolute best looks the one Kevin is thinking of is the best. It's
what real train yards look like.

R-Yard4:  Geometry is good, and the trapezoid shape works.  Minimal
curves required to make the main line fit.

R-Yard5:  Variations on 4.  The 2 "ends" are different, and of course,
could be used on either end.  The right end exits the yard at a
different angle.  To maintain the same exit angle, an extra curve
would be required.  Minimal "fudging" is required to make these
layouts fit.

R-Yard6:  Two more variations 4.  2 different "ends" that take us less
real estate.  There are myriad other similar variations that will also
fit.  Again with these 2, some fudging is required, but it is very
minimal.

Keep brainstorming!

Robin

Layouts 4,5 & 6 won't work because the Switcher 'sticks' would hit the
trains. There must be a bit of space on them.

(...) I agree that the trains look much better parked on straight track. However, I don't think all the sidings need to be the same length. We will definitely have some shorter trains (ie. Thomas), and could save some real estate by having some (...) (23 years ago, 29-Apr-01, to lugnet.org.ca.vlc)
