FYI, The Bay is selling the Extreme Creatures set (9732) at $25. Various
stickers on the box indicate that it started at 75, was marked down to
65, and then 45, but it shows up on the register at 25. Note that there
was no indication that the set is actually selling for 25, so ymmv. This
was at the Yonge & Queen Street location, and I recall hearing on the
radio that The Bay is having some kind of sale this weekend. Again, ymmv.

My wife says there were at least 4 or 5 more sets at the downtown Yonge &
Queen Street location (I wasn't actually there to see this).

I was over at the one at Yorkdale and found some items on sale, about 25-33%
off.  There was a lot of LOM stuff being cleared out.

(who is scratching his head wondering how he would ever use the optic
parts in a robot)

Well, one of the things was to use it as a cheap rotation sensor.  I think
the plan was to gear it in such a way that the FOS element rotated once
every say, 1/8th of a turn of another gear, and you had one of the fibre
elements pointing into a light sensor.  If you turned the other gear once,
the FOS would rotate eight times, allowing you a crude sense of rotation.

Another thing you can use it for is to drive the MicroScout (from the R2D2
set) as a slave to the RCX.  You take the fibre element and point it from a
light output of the RCX or the Scout and point it into the light sensor of
the MicroScout.  With a motor and  the FOS element, you can in theory drive
up to eight MicroScouts and their motors, with only two outputs.  Problem
is, the MicroScouts are big, and the fibres don't have enough length to
allow flexible positioning of the bulky Microscouts.

I think are other useful things to do with the FOS element, I just never had
the chance to get one.  Given the Extreme Creatures or say, rotation
sensors, I ended up choosing rotation sensors.

If you ever want to borrow a MicroScouts or two to play with, I have a pair,
and you're welcome to try them out.
