I wonder how many dollars have been spent by Canadians through the American

Canadian offices?  I know for myself it's an easy figure to come up with.
Zero.  Nadda.  Nothing.  Zip.  I have spent not a single penny on Shop At
Home south of the border.

I can put it this way: A lot less for me.  I used to order all sorts of
things from Canadian S@H, 2148's, track, a 4552, 4555 etc.  This year I've
ordered...only the Metroliner thing and I think I asked Jeff Elliott to buy
a package or two of roofs.  $23 for SLOPES.  What the hell!?@!#!

Which in itself wouldn't be so bad if there was just something in the stores
to buy.  On Saturday past, trips to a Zellers and two Wal-Marts resulted in
every more depressingly stocked shelves at each stop.  As a result, though I
was hoping to pick up something interesting... really anything remotely
interesting... I ended up spending once again, absolutely nothing.  Anyone
else in Canada feel this way?  Unwilling to afford (or refusing to submit
to) the steep Shop At Home prices and unable to find anything locally to buy?

Yeah, absolutely.  I feel your pain.  I was just at the Bay with a coworker
and there was a 20% off and I couldn't think of ANYTHING TO BUY.  Now, two
weeks ago, I got a Red Fury Model Team and an RDS for $39 at Winners.  About
the only time I buy Lego is at some obscure discount clearance situation :)

The S@H pricing was always steep, but I think we're not only fighting the
exchange rate, but the general issue of American lego being more expensive
overall (like a set that's $13 Canadian dollars in Canada is often priced at
$13 USD in America), the shipping (which often sealed the deal for me, I'd
feel better about buying a small set (like a 6420 Mail Carrier or two)
instead of trying to gang together several orders or leeching off JeffE or
someone. (btw, thanks Jeff)

But I don't see any other solution.  Two examples would be what I ordered:
Metroliner and roofs/windows.  Where else can we find such things?

Calum

I know what you mean, having a Canadian Shop @ Home would be SOOOO nice for us
lego enthusiasts/fans.
By pulling out of Canada, Lego no longer has to deal with currency
fluctuations (at least where Canadian currency is concerned).  I guess with
the rising costs of shipping, Lego (Shop @ Home) could no longer afford (more
like didn't want to cover) shipping costs.

I think their current shipping policy is crap, anyways.  1) it discourages
large-scale purchases, (except group bulk purchases) by its increasing
shipping schedule....

If you buy $100 worth of bulk sets, you pay over $8.00 US in shipping, when
your package might only come to $6.50 (standard priority rate).

Of course, this only applies to US shipping.  In Canada, rates are "moderately
higher" but still in US currency (which discourages sales), not to mention
taxes (GST and PST)....   [which is one big ouch after another]

I only (clearly) remember using the Stratford (Samsonite) location to order
back along time ago, to buy some flowers for my "town".  Most of my collection
in my "early days" was bought at toy stores.  Lego was still expensive (for me
to buy) but managed to get/buy some at every chance I got (but Lego was
worth the price).  The stores would have a very nice selection.

Nowadays, Lego has produced some real crap, or at least stuff that isn't worth
its price.  I liked at least SOME of the stuff put out in 2000, but all of this
wasn't worth its prices.  The stuff put out since then, in my opinion, isn't
even suitable to say in this forum....

I would like to conclude by saying that I only intended to say my recent
purchases with the "service" arm of Lego, not to start some philosophical
debate on the virtues and vices on using its service.  (and to "announce"
the building of the Genesis Engine Car for my metroliner trains).

That is all,

Benjamin Medinets
