Im trying to build a hinge in this space:

Basically I want to start with a 1x4 plate attached to a 2x4 plate and have
the 2x4 plate hinge open in the sweep defined by the blue lines.
Another possibility is to have the area not directly on top of the red piece
sweep open, leaving the area on top still attached or part of the hinge.
Maybe theres a part I dont know about or a technique Im unsure of--I know
theres a lot of smart builders out there, but I think I built myself into a
corner on this one.

If you dont need to attach anything to the 2x4 plate, use this:

| (...) I forgot about that part completely! On revisiting this issue, I have a further problem with the space. :( I think it's even smaller--a 3x1 on the bottom and a 4x1 on the top. Any ideas? Thanks btw for reminding me about 2873...got a pile of (...) (19 years ago, 15-Nov-05, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto, FTX)
