The problem with this type of crash in this kind of car is there are
little or no crumple zones to reduce the g-force loading on the
passengers.  So the people in the car are going from 115kph to zero
awfully fast.  In a more traditional car the resulting crash damage would
probably look a lot worse, but the loading on the passengers would be a
lot less.

The theory behind it is the smart is rigid and uses the other car's crumple
zone.  That's why when it was tested against a car 3 times as heavy, it just
blew a hole right threw it.  The other car (a huge Mercedes sedan) had
massive damage and the smart just bounced merrily away, without even so much
as its windshield broken.  The other car was a complete write off!

The fortwo is simply the most adorable thing ever.  Even more than
whale-plane.
