First off, this competition sounds like some good, mindless fun! So I started
building a drag racer over the weekend and have a few thoughts.

Starting: I am wondering about starting methods. How are we going to ensure the
drag racers start at the same time? Could we send a message from a remote? Or,
if the races are timed, maybe we could build a start and finish gate with light
sensors and have an arbitrator RCX time the runs. Actually, I like this idea
even if we do go head to head. Then you could calculate the average speed.

Stopping: Isn't the 45cm stopping distance a bit excessive?

Competition: Since this is so easy, we will probably get 90 entries. Every kid
with an RCX will show up. Maybe there should be a qualifying round? A minimum
speed? Minimum height requirement? (joking)

Is there anything we should do to make this even slightly more challenging? What
if we put a ramp at the end of the tables, and a 60cm (24in) gap for the car to
cross? That could be the bonus round.

Rob

(...) I like this idea, because it guarentees that both robots will have their programs started at the same time. Mandate that everyone must use a common program slot for their running program (ie, Program 1). (...) Did you ask for more homework in (...) (20 years ago, 6-Jul-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
