So I get home last night and there's this letter in my mailbox. Some
solicitor/barrister from Richmond Hill notified me that I have to write a cheque
for $238.39 or appear in court in 10 days for momies owed a local cell phone
provider.
Cell phone??? When was the last ime there was a cell phone in my name??? I've
been at Laidlaw for 4 years and they give me a company phone. Before that I had
a cell phone but was with another company than the one suing me.
But it was 7 p.m. when I got home so I cound;t do much about it then.
This morning I call the lawyer. He wants a cheque in his hands in 10 business
days or we go to court. I try to explain to him that I don't owe money to the
company he's representing, and I'll need some sort of documentation (like a
bill) that shows I owe this money. He fires back that when the situation gets
this far, and lawyers get involved, that I'm just suppose to write a cheque.
Okay then--siutation this far--4 years ago I cancel my personal cell phone--and
then yesterday I get a letter from a lawyer. Yeah--I can see the process of
escalation...
So I call up the cell company mentioned in the suit. So happens that this
company also provides my office with servince and support, so I already knew
people there. They look me up--"Oh, we bought the company you used to be with"
Well, that's interesting, but what about the $238.39? "Not in our records...
our records say you're all paid up back in Dec. '00" and no one at the telco
has any idea about the lawsuit--but check with the collection agency.
So I call up the collection agency. Turns out that they say I don't owe any
money either. So what goes on here?
Now, whilst venting about these things that appear out of the blue, I wait for
the lawyer to return my call.
Few things--
For their very dirty job, the collections company personnel were very nice,
sincere, and helpful on the telephone. I dunno if I'd be that pleasant in their
line of work, vis a vis rude people who don't want to pay monies owed.
The telco personnel were also pleasent, though probably 'cause I went thru the
corporate side first, and they have a pretty big fat contract with my company.
The lawyer, for all the money he gets, was very unpleasant and not
helpful--"Send me a cheque or appear in court" was all he had.

| So now all three companies involved--the telco, the barrister and the collections agency, all assure me that this matter is being looked into and that I do not have to go to court and such. I keep on mentioning to them, however, that I'd like that (...) (21 years ago, 22-Dec-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
