Re: WANTED -- ideas to teach kids about lego roboitcs

(...) these kids will be less than 6. after much thought I tend to agree with everyone's ideas of pre built (and programmed) robots. what i will probably do is build as many line follower (or something) robot, and offer the kids the ability to (...)   Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

(...) HUH!!!???? how much more exact do you need than 12" ???? the only thing I can add, is that dead hung rope will have a tendency to curl. I think we can cover our buts and let people know that fully stretched the rope will be 12" from the (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) *smacks forehead* That's what I get for talking in a forum full of engineering graduates... Right, yeah, that idea suddenly doesn't look so great. (...) That's true. (...)   Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

(...) Iain, didn't we have this discussion 3 YEARS ago??? I thought we moved on. I think that calum will put BOTH unit on the official rules page, but here in this forum, we can use whatever measurement we want. so Iain, this is for you. upper (...)   Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

(...) michael, I do agree that I would like to see interesting hand over hand robots.... but I learned my lesson with monkey bars. by excluding solutions we would never get to see the "other" side of creativity. (...) rob is correct. spooling will (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

A couple of suggestion on the proposed rules: "The rope will hang roughly 12" from the floor." I think this needs to be a more exact measurement...because of the reaching-up aspect, the differerance between 11" and 13" could be the difference (...)   Re: WANTED -- ideas to teach kids about lego roboitcs

(...) First, this isn't much time. Second - How old are the kids? You will have your hands full AND need help. I've been doing this for 4th and 5th graders, BUT over a minimum of 8 one hour sessions with 12 kids max. I actually do a progression of (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

(...) I think "spooling" would be quite difficult. First, grabbing on to the rope is not a trivial task. Second, the more you gear the "spool" down, the more counterweight you need to deal with the "gerbil effect", meaning you want the spool to turn (...)   Bricks and Blocks St Jacobs and Cookstown have new stock in!

Seeing if I can get a item list/price list to post, but they have some new stock in for sure, HP, big mini-fig, lots of new goodies. (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: WANTED -- ideas to teach kids about lego roboitcs

(...) I was going to be unconstructive and suggest you bring a mixed box of lego and get the kids to sort it. Worst case, you end up with the same mess, best case you get your lego sorted. But seriously, it depends so much on how old these kids are (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: [rtlToronto] rtlToronto16 Preliminary Rules Released

(...) lmao. I still object to the spooling method... It doesn't really seem in the spirit of 'climbing' a rope. Besides that, all you have to do is grab and then gear it down enough to lift... whereas if we eliminate that option then there might be (...) (21 years ago, 25-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) I didn't actually intend to be mean about it: I do think it's cool. I don't know why Chris finds it so funny, so much so that he called me up at work to say it was funny? :) Calum (21 years ago, 24-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Re: WANTED -- ideas to teach kids about lego roboitcs

(...) Actually, I'll chime in on Steve's side here - Sumo is not what rtlToronto is about, but having kids smash robots together is, usually, a hit. One option is have a standard chassis with easily switchable gearing (different gear ratios), (...) (21 years ago, 24-Feb-04, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
