Just to jump in on this with a few thoughts:
I would not call them safes for two reasons:
1. that is a fairly recent use of the part, it is much older than the wild
west sets
2. how many safes have you ever seen that have a slot almost large enough
for a person to stick their hand into?
I'd be strongly inclined to call them mailboxes because of the slot, which
conveniently allows a 1x2 mail tile to be pushed through (of course it also
allows a money tile or gold coins to be put through).
Other things they could be called:
- lockers
- drop boxes (which includes mailboxes, but also think about your library or
video store after hours drop box)
- refrigerators (though most refrigerators open from the side not the top)
- washing machine
- dishwasher
You get the idea, they have lots of uses. I'd be curious as to what their
first use actually was for.
