Well I guess now is as good a time as ever to bring this up...

I have had some personal issues/concerns about the webring for some time • now
but have not been able to think of an appropriate time or place to bring • it up.
The LEGO ring is great in and of itself what I have a problem with is
www.webring.org and how easy it is to get to the site from the ring.

To put it bluntly there are some rather unsavory rings hosted but
www.webring.org which are NOT in line with what I think the LEGO ring • should be
associated with.

That is true.

If it weren't so easy to get to them from the LEGO ring I
probably wouldn't have a problem with it but the fact that it is so easy • and
because of the nature of some of the rings I wonder how much we should be
associated with www.webring.org .  I personally would feel much better if
another solution were developed and were hosted by LUGNET *before* the • ring
moves.

Good thoughts, really.  I hadn't thought of the other rings hosted (as a
ringmaster, there is an option to 'rate' the webring, from G all the way to
XXX, so I do know about the other rings hosted) on webring.org as easy to
get to, but that's just my mental picture of the site differing from yours.

So, are you saying that for the sake of protecting LUGNET's identity and the
young LUGNET users from the more evil side of webring.org, before moving the
site the ring should exist exclusively on LUGNET?  This might extend things
a bit, but it might be the better alternative.  I do understand and agree
with your concerns.

I realize that I may be paranoid here and that I may be rocking the ship a • bit
but I just think the forces that be should really think about this and • realize
that such a move could potentially make it very easy to get to some very
off-color sites almost directly from LUGNET.

Don't worry.  Its a legitimate concern that deserves being brought up.  I'm
definitely in the same camp as you are on this, it was just an oversight on
my part.

The way I see it, from using webring.org's system for 3 and a half years
now, is to get to rings which are not suitable for children, one has to
look.  If one stays within the LMWR management area, they will not be seen.
Still, its possible, and I don't think anyone would want LUGNET to link to
that.

But just the same, would I want www.zacktron.com to link to that??
Definitely not.  But LUGNET clearly gets more exposure than
www.zacktron.com, so the lesser of two evils would be to keep the page where
it is until the problem can be solved.

I'm also especially irked about how Yaheww! slaps their logo over • everything
they swallow - as if GeoCities wasn't bad enough already...

Personally I hope that Yahoo can clean up the Webring site.  Yah there • logo is
everywhere but thats there right.  I know that its one of the reasons I • have
left my origional GeoCities site to rot but, if you can live with the adds • I
guess GeoCities is often one of the easier and better choices for free
space.

Yep.  Sure their logo is their right, but its also my right to be annoyed at
their logo.  Personally I think the logo is tachy and doesn't need nor
deserve to be coupled with brand names which have existed in relative peace
for their years of existance online.  I'm pretty much against the whole
merger deal, its creating a few huge companies vs. a lot of smaller ones, so
they become more powerful, the commercial world becomes more monotonous, etc
etc...  And that's another beef I have with Yaheww!, AOL, MSN, and the
like...

Please don't take this personally.  I like the LEGO webring and the theory
behind it I just don't like the site that runs the ring (
www.webring.org )

Not taken personally in the least.  Some good words and good ideas.
