I hope you will not be too tough on her.  She probably found the
assignment and thought it sounded good and assigned it without taking
the time to try it out herself (happens more at this time of year when
teachers are getting swamped with stuff and need new ideas to hold their
attention).

Part of the problem was bad communication (by Nik to us). This was an
enrichment assignment, not a mandatory one. And only some of the kids got
it, it wasn't intended to actually be solved... (I know this now because Jo
called me, it's been the buzz of the mommy circle)

Actually it sounds like a fun assignment to me too-- if my second grader
were to bring it home I think he (and I!) would have fun with it!.  Plus,
I'm normally not disturbed by assignments like these because I figure if
MY kid has trouble, other kids are having MORE trouble.

Ya, good point.

My concern arose when I heard that enterprising young schoolyard capitalists
were selling answers. Nik now has what is needed to flood the market and
commoditise it! :-) JD and Dan, can you take payment in squashed candybars
and small change? :-)

(Yeah, Lar, I guess you're not the only arrogant one
around here.)

Face it. LUGNET(tm) readers, AND their kids, are just smarter than average.
The sooner the rest of the world comes to grips with that, the better... :-)
