Rui,
Actually, NT and 2000 have much better memory management that 95/98. 95
and 98 will most likely only perform better on lower end machines with less
than 64MB of ram. Granted NT and 2000 do like their resources, but with
128MB of RAM and above, 9x will continue to swap to the harddisk, regardless
of virtual memory settings. NT/2000 will take what they need and give the
rest back. For sure, the more powerful the machine the better it gets, but
I've run 2000 server on a p166 win 96MB of RAM without a hiccup. Plus 9x
doesn't protect the memory allocation nearly as well, letting applications
that bomb out take down the entire system.
I've been running 2000 at work and home since beta2 and have seen only a
single bluescreen. Marsbase is hosted on a 2000 server in my home and is
down only when I take down. The reliability is phenominal. The speed is
there as well. However, Mladen is correct in saying that not all games run.
Tim, if you're going to game, DO stick with Win9x. And look to Windows
Millenium when it's released, it'll do nicely for you.
Lastly, I can state with certainty that all the latest LEGO related
software runs, and runs well on 2000. I haven't run LDRAW/LEDIT in ages since
I started using MLCad, but I can't see a reason why it wouldn't.
Just my .02. Gads, hope we don't have a flame war brewing. Ick. 8)
Oh, I'm sending this follow-up to lugnet.off-topic.geek.
