Re: Cable Modem, Day 1: Elation and Nausea

off-topic.geek replying to my own message... Uh. There was a little "Help" link on the www.rr.com page. That helped. Got the darn smtp address. Now I can finally mail my "Auczilla" bids, the true purpose of having a cable modem. (24 years ago, 19-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) Yeah. The scuttlebutt is that they (RoadRunner) consider a personal firewall to be a violation of their Terms Of Use--if "they" understand the issue beyond being scared of it. LinkSys personal routers are *right out*. This is all rumor, (...) (24 years ago, 19-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) We've had the same problems here in Champaign-Urbana (Illinois) with DSL delivery. McLeod put in two fiber rings around the twin cities over a year ago, but still haven't made *DSL available to the public despite promises to have it ready by (...)   Cable Modem, Day 1: Elation and Nausea

Wow. After 6 months of DSL he** (Covad/Bell Atlantic) that failed to deliver even a copper wire, I got a sales call from Road Runner, and was up and running (ha ha) on a cable modem within 3 business days. AMAZINGLY, Covad's stock crashed by 55% (...) (24 years ago, 19-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Screwed up newsreaders...

(...) I wasn't getting excited about it. I was bemoaning the fact that Netscape doesn't give you the choice as to whether to use strict or relaxed threads. It certainly can be more pleasant reading a thread which is broken by a broken newsreader (...) (24 years ago, 17-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

(...) Don't get too excited about this. Forte (Free) Agent does the same thing. I suspect it's a common custom on newsreaders. I think the longest-running thread on LUGNET has the subject "test". On lugnet.off-topic.test, of course. Steve (24 years ago, 16-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Helllllllppppp!

Hmmm, I was able to log in but I havn't gotten any new mail since friday, which is highly unlikely. I just sent my self 2 test messages, an out going, and an incoming, to see if it is working.... I already got the one I sent to my yahoo account. But (...) (24 years ago, 16-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)

  Re: Screwed up newsreaders...

(...) The problem is that Outlook 98 and Outlook Express seem to use some joint configuration wrto e-mail. The result is that I have been unable to configure OE to send the e-mail itself. I think the problem may be that both applications are MAPI. (24 years ago, 16-Oct-00, to lugnet.off-topic.geek)
