At the top of each news-message is a header, which consists of a set of header
lines. One of these lines is called Message-ID and specifies a unique
identifier string for each message. For example, your message (which I am
replying to) contains the line:
Message-ID: <MPG.11106c31ad1ea998969e@lugnet.com>
My message then identifies itself as a follow-up to your message by containing
a reference to your message, for example:
References: <MPG.11106c31ad1ea998969e@lugnet.com>
A follow-up message can have one or many references to earlier articles in the
thread, and by reading and interpreting all of these message ID and references,
a newsreader makes a thread-tree.
Here is a graphical example of a medium-size thread-tree spanning multiple
newsgroups:
