    WooHoo!!! —Jeff Stembel
WooHoo!! Two news items that have made me *very* happy! Item 1: DIVX is dead!!!! Yay! Cm'on everyone, lets sing! Ding, Dong, DIVX is dead... (I can't believe I *said* that!)         Re: WooHoo!!! —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) Which would explain why the Circuit City here is trying so hard to get rid of them. Pray, tell -- just why is DIVX dead? Actually, what exactly is DIVX? Cheers, - jsproat (25 years ago, 16-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: WooHoo!!! —Jeff Stembel
(...) DIVX (...) It was a corperate ploy to milk consumers for more money, and most people didn't fall for it. ;) Actually, I think they were having a hard time getting movie companies to make DIVX discs. You can read more about it at CNET's (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

          Re: WooHoo!!! —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) [reading NEWS.COM] And, apparently, Circuit City is the big player for DIVX. Huh, I was going to buy my Diamond Rio from them, but it seems that I'll be looking for another reseller. (...) Evil. Patently evil coin-sucking bastards cavorting in (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

          Re: WooHoo!!! —Tom McDonald
(...) Did you actually sing it? And your little dog too? (...) Yay! The first time I heard about this I decided that I could actually live without it. And happily. But the indoor plumbing stays. Though I have a feeling something like DIVX will catch (...) (25 years ago, 16-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

           Re: WooHoo!!! —Steve Bliss
(...) No, but I overheard my son the other day, playing with his Star Wars LEGO-brand toys, saying, "I'll get you, my pretty! And your little X-Wing, too!" Steve "Can you believe I only got 46% on the insanity test" Bliss (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

           Re: WooHoo!!! —Terry Keller
(...) Interesting note about DIVX being "dead": All player purchases prior to 16 June, 1999 are eligible for a $100 rebate. see (URL) quote "existing, registered customers will be able to view discs during a two-year phase-out period" And finally, (...)            Re: WooHoo!!! —Ed Jones
(...) Now if you can rework an 8-track player to play them, that would be a coup. :') (25 years ago, 17-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

          Re: WooHoo!!! —Jasper Janssen
(...) Aargh, forget the stupid Boycott stuff. They have just as much right to try and make money as the next guy, and apparently, they're about 10% cheaper with normal stuff. (...) The players play regular DVD too, you know. Jasper (25 years ago, 18-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: WooHoo!!! —Mark Herzberg
(...) DIVX is this thing where you go out to Circuit City or whoever else sells them and you buy a DVD movie for $4.95. You can play the movie for only 48 hours, and then it scrambles up and it's unusable, unless you decide to pay an extra $14.95. (...) (25 years ago, 19-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

     (...) Can't we all just scoff from where we're at? -- Terry K -- (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Why DIVX sux (was: WooHoo!!!) —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) Sure, but only the first 48 hours are free. You've far surpassed that, Terry, so it'll be $3.25 per session -- it's much cheaper to scoff someone else. :-D Cheers, - jsproat (25 years ago, 21-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Re: Why DIVX sux (was: WooHoo!!!) —Terry Keller
(...) I scoff at lame attempts to collect fees as well. :-P But, since I believe in paying my own way, I will fess up for the above scoffery: $3.25 There. Paid. -- Terry K -- (25 years ago, 22-Jun-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
