I checked with my friend at work from Iraq (note that he identifies himself as
Assyrian) and confirms that arranged marriages were still happening there as of
20 years ago (when he decided he didn't want to die for the glory of Saddam and
left for America). I'll have to check with another co-worker who is Persian
(Iran) who didn't want to die for the glory of the Ayatollah K.
It was interesting to note that my friends who had the arranged marriage say
they are lucky because they fell in love with each other, but NO WAY were they
going to arrange anything for their daughter. :-)
