It seems that McCarthyism (spelling?) has returned to America. Or, perhaps, we
could coin a more modern phrase: Agendaism. Our society, by in large, has
abandoned a belief in principles of objective truth that have a moral imperative
upon our conduct; and, thereby, we act by principles of expediency and ends-
justify-the-means coersion.
Our government has indeed (to echo earlier posts) become alarmingly Socialist.
Our presidential administration and the gov./political heirarchy that they have
created and influence seem to operate from a worldview that holds that our
liberties are granted by Government and beholden to Government; and that
therefore Government has the right to control and mold nearly every aspect of
our beliefs, education, and "morality" (I put this in parenthesis because in
Agendaism morality is a nebulous thing which is more akin to popular opinion and
expendiency than solid truth).
On the contrary, however, I would assert that government is charged with
stewardship of our liberties. These liberties should come from principles of
truth and justice that are outside or above the system. In other words,
government should be accountable to the same principles that govern the
governed. Our Clinton/Gore/HRC/Carville (whatever his name is)/(fill in blank
of other Clinton friends) have been a law unto themselves. I sincerely hope
that this November we can put an end to this sad period in American politics.

But there isn't, and I fear Dubya has cronies of his own. Perhaps they won't be as venal as the (...) (25 years ago, 23-Mar-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
