Just an open question to Lugnet.

In the recent thread about Richie Dulin's Nazi Spiffcraft, I felt the need to
speak my mind about the subject matter Richie posted.  I made, what I felt, was
an honest and accurate critique.  That critique prompted a host of responces,
etc which has turned into a fairly ugly flame war that doesn't seem to want to
die.

My question is this: Should I have kept my mouth shut?  I felt that I should say
something, but that might have been the wrong thing to do.  I wanted to critique
Richie's MOC, but I was also concerned about what that MOC might say about AFOL
community at large.

Second question: Should I have said my peace and then left the conversation,
despite accusations that I wanted to censor Richie, or that I support Stalin's
mass murders, that I'm a racist or the other misunderstandings that were being
spread?

This seems to happen from time-to-time, where I have an opinion that is
unpopular and people feel the need to speak out against me.  At BrickFest, Jude
asked me why I was always so negative.  I don't want to be negative, but when
someone says something untrue about me or my motives, I feel the need to correct
it.  It is that, I think, that turns it into a flame war.

I believe Dave Schuler correctly identifies the root cause of the nazi mess
here: http://news.lugnet.com/off-topic/debate/?n=27208

In response to your questions, You should speak your mind whenever you want.
It's amusing to me that those who called you out for censorship wanted to censor
you for their perceptions of your censorship.

Should you have bailed out early on? I say yes. These flame wars are almost
always an escalation of a sepcific point. Here's a quick summary of the
aforementioned nazi mess:

Person A: "Here's a flying swastika."
Person B: "I don't find the MOC to be well built, and your subject matter may be
a sore spot for many people"
Persons C, D, E, F: "You're a censor! Censorship is BAD! I HAVE RIGHTS!"
Persons B, G, H, I: "It's not censorship, it's thinking about your actions.
Think of the children. Won't anyone please think of the children?"
Persons C, D, E, F: "Slippery slope! Slippery slope! I HAVE RIGHTS!"
Persons B, G, H, I: "You hurt my feelings with your lack of caring for other's
feelings. I weep for the children."

And so on, and so forth.

For instance, the current gun thingy. It has gone from case specific to finding
an algorithm for applying standards across BrickShelf and Lugnet.

Eject early. Most people will develop their opinions and look for defenses of
that opinion, instead of being open to change. That's the way the world works.
Say your piece, and if you hit a wall, make a quick turn down Profane Lane and
yuk it up a little.

(...) Actually, there wasn't much discussion of censorship in the LUGNET thread. You may be thinking of the one on JLUG[1], but i thought we'd agreed that what goes on in JLUG should stay in JLUG. Cheers, Allister [1]which didn't transpire quite as (...) (19 years ago, 25-Aug-05, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
