Thats actually far easier said than done. And increasingly more problematic in
the U.S. than some other countries apparently (esp. Europe, I admit I have no
idea about the food standards in Canada).
Random thoughts:
I just want to know that if I buy corn -- it really is just corn! Not corn
genetically altered to have a few strains of swine DNA or some damned thing.
The BBC reported last week that new GM corn is reducing insect populations near
a test field. Thats not a good thing -- I am reminded of the birds that die in
the mineshaft as a warning to the miners to get the hell out!
Because there is no labelling in effect so far, you cant tell if you are eating
GM products or not. I would tend not to eat them myself.
I think CNN is reporting that cloned animals may soon be available at the
butchers counter. Now why raising hogs in the old fashioned way is less
desirable than cloned pigs I guess I may never know...
These GM and cloned products seem to be solutons for non-existent problems. I
dont think the proscuitto is going to taste any better coming from a cloned
pig.
Lastly, it is not for nothing that nature tries a little bit of everything
(evolution in action). Some things are not robust enough to succeed -- and they
shouldnt! Now we stupid human beings think we are smart enough to decide based
on some arbitrary market created motives that certain features are better than
others for corn, pig, and tomacco
http://www.kptv.com/Global/SearchResults.asp?qu=tomacco!
The greeks called this kind of insane hubris hamartia -- a character flaw or
error that leads to ones downfall.
I mean, rice and corn -- was there something wrong with these grains before now?
If it aint broke, dont fix it...
