Why is it that the shows I really like get cancelled?

I loved 'Sports Night'--gone after 2 seasons.

''KRP'?  Like the wind...

And now 'Firefly'.  Grr!!!

At least Babylon 5 eeked out the 5 seasons that jms wanted, and MASH got its 11.

But it seems as if these TV execs have a very short attention span and are
not in it for the 'long run', like TV used to be.

For example, Cheers and Night Court were both shows that did very poorly in
the ratings for the first few seasons, yet alone episodes.  Seinfeld was
virtually unheard of during its first season.

But no, the execs at Fox, in their infinite wisdom, cancelled Firefly after
10 eps. (I know I'm not including the pilot--they just aired that as
filler--wasn't part of the regular sched.)

Gene Roddenberry teach you execs anything?  JMS?  Sci fi takes a while to
get established, then becomes part of the 'history' of television--Firefly
didn't get a chance to catch on.

Stick with stuff that works--Firefly worked.

Well, 'nuff ranting for one day--At least I saw the show.

Ok, yes I agree some good shows got cancelled.  But I have to ask ya'll, I'm
trying to remember an old 80s scifi series.  It had a guy who could be
digitized, like tron.  He had a car that looked wire traced and his
'sidekick' was a dot.  It was a glowing pixel or cursor that would draw out
his car or a weapon of some kind.  All I remember was that it was one of my
favorite shows as a kid.  And to end all cancelled scifi arguements, I enter
Dr. Who.  They cut that off way to early with no ending and it's been way
too long since anybody has tried to touch it (I don't count the fox movie,
that was garbage).  That's a scifi show that needs a come back.

(...) I agree. Dr Who still has so much potential - especially in the mini series type format - rather than the "50 minutes to save the universe" approach shows use these days. BTW: was the fox movie not supposed to be a pilot? Getting us back (...) (22 years ago, 27-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) I think that was "Automan" that was mentioned earlier in this thread. Was one of my favorite shows as well... though all I really remember is the hero saying "Cursor..." and the dot would create whatever was needed. :) (22 years ago, 27-Jan-03, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
