I'm happy for you that you get the meaning you do from this time of
year, but we in our family just don't. Secular society has taken back
the holiday from those who stole it, for the most part, and I'm kind of
glad. I think commercialism is a good thing, while religion is the
opiate of the masses who don't know better. :-)

People have been celebrating winter solstice since well before the start of Judaeism, much less Christianity. The early expropriation of that holiday by the Christian church was one of the greatest marketing ploys of the first millenium. I'm happy (...) (26 years ago, 12-Dec-98, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
