Dave!
You are SO hosed, my hundreds of $$$ poorer clone brick friend.
Did you get Sears' assertion in writing?
I am not a lawyer -- but as for confronting the dealership, the only advice
I can give that may help is to assert to them that you will have no trouble
taking them to small claims court to resolve the issue. If they have to go
to court they will spend the amount you are haggling over within mere hours
(could even be under a single hour) with attorneys fees, so if you seem
adamant they may cave just to get it off their plate. Then again, they may
fight you just to disparage such claims in the future.
On the other side of this is the fact that Sears is notorious for screwing
people over unnecessary auto repairs. I seem to recall some investigative
report about this on a national network some time ago. Of course this
appears to be par for the industry in general. See:

I tend to do my own car work if at all possible. So far the only things I
haven't touched are an automatic transmission, and the fuel injection
systems that are essentially standard now. Of course since my family races
NASCAR for kicks, I have access to everything I need. Even my nephew races
Cage cars or some such. I try to keep my distance from these matters though
for fear of getting sucked into the pit crew.
