*BIG BIG SIGH*
Gosh I don't know where to start. I read this message within the minute
after it was posted this evening while sitting in class, and instantaneously
I knew it would erupt into a flamewar. When things get slow on the
'Friendliest place on the internet' its bound to happen.
I've sat silent for a few months on threads like this. I used to be a big
participant in these types of threads too, until I reached my breaking point.
What I'm most frustrated at is the people on here who think its their duty
to dissect each and every person's actions. I'm not talking about stuff
like gently reminding people to post in a different group, or asking someone
not to post the same message repeatedly to a market group. What I'm talking
about is how everything winds up in a debate of morality, religion,
politics, etc.
I think its debates like this one that devalue this sector of the LEGO
community for a lot of people. It sure took me long enough to realize it.
Its tiresome and insulting to the sensibilities of the people who come here
to enjoy the LEGO hobby.
I've watched several threads like this in the last few weeks, over silly
things. I don't want to argue morality here, though I do have a view on it,
for me this is a bigger issue. What Matt does is up to him, what everyone
else thinks about what Matt does is their own business. These aren't issues
that are constructive in the least to building solidarity in this community.
Why share them here?
And the personal attacks. Sheesh.
From http://news.lugnet.com/starwars/?n=13255 John Rudy writes:
"I, as a member of this community feel ashamed that we include scum like you
in our daily net-dealings."
"Scum like you?" John, dude, do you even know Matt? I don't. That's why I
don't insult him like that. Heck, even if I *did* know him, I wouldn't hurl
an insult like that at him. Geez.
One thing I've learned a TON about even in the last couple events I've
attended is not to judge an entire person only by his or her online persona.
I've personally met a couple people here who I once had a severe dislike
for. To my surprise, I ended up getting along great with them. I realized
they were not the type of people who I thought they were based on their posts!
So, for the sake of the more sensible here, chill, please.
Build something. Do something positive. Enjoy this wonderful hobby we all
share. But please, please, please, don't jump to insult and criticse
someone for the sake of claiming a moral high ground. Go ahead and hold
your opinion of morality, but please don't throw it around here. Heck,
throw it around here, who am I to tell you not to? But realize that some
people get really, Really, REALLY irritated at it. In turn, that turns
people off to participating here. And our community suffers.
I wish I realized that sooner myself. Then I would have more time building
under my belt and less time being a blowhard. I'm making up for it though,
I post less, that means I build more.
Build, have fun, chill, don't take yourself so seriously. If you absoultely
have to get it out, please, for the sake of the community, take it somewhere
else.
Thanks.
-Tim
