Hi David,
Don't feel stupid about not knowing what those terms are. You have many more
acronyms to worry about (like spud, burp and snot!)
IPO stands for Initial Public Offering which is when a company decides to sell
stock to the public with the intent of generating income. This is usually done
when a company first starts out and needs capital or when a privatly owned
company is in dire straights.
The "red herring" is a report that the company publishes about it's self to
promote themselves to potential investors. It's basically a book which lists
every aspect of the buisness than an investor will need and want to know before
they buy the stock. Remember that buying stock in buying a part of that company
and all the risks and benefits that go with company ownership.
The secret to the IPO is that with that first offering of stock the value can
be very low, so it can look like a good deal. This can backfire aggresivly as
we have seen recently with many tech stock.
There you have your instant economics lesson for the day.
Thank you for listening.
GREG~
