shame on me for responding to my own post, but i found where i had put some
images for the godzilla stuff:

the ghidorah is actually the cooler of the two sets (godzilla looks more like
an alley cat on steroids) but i found it interesting the way these models use
ball-and-socket elements for better mobility of arms and legs (and this was
BEFORE throw-bots).
as i understand it the gamera model (like the ultraman) doesn't use the
ball-and-socket approach but rather suggests the builder reconstruct the model
to the desired pose (standing, kneeling, flying, etc.). that's kind of a
rip-off, but again, i like them more for displaying anyway.
