The plates are the main member. You're right, it is a really strong
construction. There are several crossmembers between the two parts of the
track frame. One of them is the motor itself, and the other ones are also
the housing of the geartrain. The whole trackframe can be divided into two
halfes to make transport easier. You can see the two bolts for this function
in the middle of the frame.

This is a good subject for a building discussion. I really like using plates
now and have several successful applications. I did it on the body of my
crawler crane:

and then built several "sample" bridges to display this concept:

I've also pinched this idea for my bridge - the deck support beams are dual
rows of 2x plates sandwiching bricks at the joints. Unfortunately the scale is
too small to allow decent box girders or trusses along the decks themselves 8?(

I made a plate-on-tile sliding turntable. For a roller construction, the
whole thing is a bit too small. You have to know that it (the turntable)
measures only 14 studs in diameter.
You will see more pics as soon as I disassemble the crane into the different
modules.

I'm looking forward to that. But first, did you use a large Technic
turntable inside? Did you restrain it axially with a threaded axle?

It's the same for me. Cranes are always fascinating.
So this is not my last crane model.

I guess we really need to start a crane group, or have our own newsgroup on
Lugnet ;-)

Yep, I feel the urge growing again...
