I thought up another way to set up an auction with anti-sniper
protection. List your item with a huge reserve, and then when the
auction ends, contact the high bidder, and re-list the item, with a
reserve price equal to his high bid. If the high bidder is a sniper, you
can contact the previous high bidder, and give him the chance to beat
the sniper's high bid. Once the "winner" bids, end the auction
immediately (or you could even skip the 2nd auction and just make a
private arrangement, but that would certainly be against eBay's rules).
You don't even necessarily have to specify that you will be doing this
in your description (though you probably should since it may piss off
the high bidder). Of course if by some bizzare reason, the auction
actually reaches your reserve, you lose the anti-sniper protection. The
only disadvantage of this system is the listing fee is always $2 per
current rates (you need to set a reserve of at least $50 on just about
any item to be most sure that the reserve won't be met).
One other disadvantage, if you don't state how the auction works, people
may get frustrated when seemingly high and fair bids don't meet the
reserve. You also sort of don't get to have a real reserve (though in
actuallity, you can just tell the "winner" what your reserve is, and
give him the option of meeting it).
This whole scheme is probably against eBays rules unfortuanately.

| eBay provides a form that allows a seller to cancel a bid, *if you have a valid reason*. (See (URL) - sorry, I don't know how to link this). Perhaps a seller could put in the item description that the seller reserves the right to cancel any bid (...) (26 years ago, 19-May-99, to lugnet.market.theory)
