<big snip>

Not wanting to be there all night, or to hold everyone behind me up, I asked
how long it would take.  After being assured that it would only take a
couple minutes, I agreed.  She gave me an application to fill out and
continued to ring up my merchandise.

I filled out the form and she called over the manager to approve it, and
continued on with the ringing.  The manager checked my ID andn then took the
application to her office to enter it in the computer.  Meanwhile my order
is done.  I'm looking at the line behind me and thinking "Oh my, these
people are going to eat me alive" when the cashier calmly says "I'm going to
suspend your order and take care of these people behind you, OK?".

Now, this is not unheard of.  The registers as McDonalds could hold multiple
orders when I worked there 15 years ago.  But I had never seen this at an
actual store.  After being stuck in K-Mart lines for an eternity behind
someone while they try to find a price on something, consider me amazed by
this!

But it gets even better!  After the manager returns with my completed
application and approval code, instead of tying up the cashier and the
register, she took me over to one of the unused registers, pulled my order
up on that register, and completed the transaction.  I'd like to see that
happen at K-Mart!

I haven't seen this happen myself, but I've been wondering for YEARS why
this couldn't be done.  Can't remember how many times I've found myself
waiting for 10 minutes in line at the supermarket, with 6 people behind
me, while the cashier sends someone back to determine what the price of
the can of peas in the cart of the person in front of me should cost.
