As for the demeanor of individual associates... at least where I am,
about 50% of people who ever get trained for the service desk are *mean*
to customers.  (i.e., will, for example, make up rules which deny the
customer what they want)  About 25% are nice, but won't bend the rules
to benefit a customer, and the last 25% actually go out of their way to
help customers.  Management likes the last 25% best (even though we cost
the store more money _directly_, we make more customers happy, thus they
spend more money with us), at least where I am.  I don't know if this is
a typical situation or not.

I'm often puzzled by the things that are tolerated by management at
retail stores.  I know working retail can suck - I've done it, but
it seems like even decent managers put up with horrible behavior out
of their employees.

If you know that half your fellow employees are actually "mean" to
customers I can only assume management does as well - why do they
put up with it?

I know "they" say we have a labor shortage, but does it always mean
businesses have to put up with substandard employees?
Well where I work they have brought in temps right now just to fill
things in.  The temps are cashiering, stocking and working in the
back, helping people on the floor is one thing they are not doing.  A
number of them don't speak much english, but as long as they do what
they were brought in to do, I don't care myself.  Many of the people
who are interviewed do not seem to get hired or don't stay.  Just a
few weeks ago one lady got hired went thru orientation and then quit
before her first ''real" shift, which really muck up the schedule let
me tell you.  So yes there is a shortage of people (at least ones with
transportation) in many areas.  There are a few people who if I had
the say so would not have continued employment with my employer.  I
don't have the say so and they do still work where I do.  These people
are stupid or only semi-competant or both, but they show up.  It comes
down to what's better, having a body to show up or only having a
couple of people trying to do everything.  The latter really sucks and
the former is not much better really.....  Plus with today's sue happy
environment you had better document everything from the get go if they
screw up or you can be stuck with them even if you don't want to
be....
