I'm in Australia and I recently completed a trade with a person in the US.
I sent my parcel to the US via Economy Airmail and it took around 16 days.
The parcel from the US was sent Surface and it took 63 days.
Packages were about the same size.
As far as I'm aware, surface US to Aus and vice versa really is surface.
