I'll have to go look again. They may in fact be smaller than
18", but they were in boxes that were open in the front, and
were clearly single oversized minifigs. The power went out at
the mall right about that time so I didn't get to fiddle with
them. (They had a bunch of other LIC merch so I presume it was
LEGO's own kiosk.)
Does TLC sell other "maxifigs" that are different? (But since
posting I've seen the picture others pointed to and they do
look different.) The kiosk in question was at Twelve Oaks in
Novi, MI. I'm back in NJ now but I"ll go look in August when
I go home.

What do you mean by "cast?" I'm talking about ABS ones--at
least, I think they are. They were definitely plastic, at any
rate, and most certainly for sale--and NOT Sculpture, but upscaled
standard minifigs. From the sounds of it they're a different
item, though, especially given the amounts you said they've
fetched at auction.
