I think I must have slipped a gear during all this--I was still focusing on
the 2x4 brick and hadn't considered how it extends to other elements.  What
if Bram makes a whole bunch of aluminum pitchforks?   8^)

There was a great deal of original design in the Intelliblocks line
(alongside starkly basic brick and plate) but then there was that goofy
lance. They took the Lego lance (introduced in 1979) and put a hook on the
end. If this wasn't a ripoff, I don't know what is, because the piece was
non-functional as well. Its only reason for being seems that the pirate
lance mold was on hand already, and the budget controller said "do it, and
stick a hook on it."

Yeah, that threw me for a loop, too.  The lance even has a roughness
suggesting (to me) shoddy mold casting of an actual LEGO lance.  On the
other hand, they're not *actually* lances but are actually some sort of boat
hook, IIRC (in the film anyway).  Obviously, though, the part is still the
part, and it's a fairly obvious ripoff of the lance.
The torch parts from the Prancing Pony sets are apparently based on the
basic LEGO antenna, too.

There's a great deal to recommend Bram's aluminum brick - I bought two of
them, just enough to play with. Aside from the tubes (an original solution
to a difficulty in milling) it's still homage or a curiosity; I can't
imagine it being a building medium.

I hope to see them show up in various MOC's.  Time will tell...
