Why not? Whom does it hurt? I am not a participant in Lugnet just so people
announcing sales and trades can dictate from on high whatever crazy prices
they think they can get. I am often here making comments that hopefully
benefit other consumers. Whether I succeed is another matter.
When it comes to what prices some items should fetch, I find I sometimes
come at loggerheads with AFOL who have been buying-selling-trading since
before the days of RTL. Some of the prices that they have in their heads
(often based on prices from the earlier days of lego trading on the internet
when items seemed scarcer and more unavailable) are quite skewed if you
consider the near ubiquity of most, not all, sets now (in the later, post
eBay/Brickbay era in which lego sets are quite easy to obtain). I am sorry
if you feel that some people cannot now cash in their sets for the cash they
think they are worth, but it is my opinion that prices have fallen and not
risen in most cases (this may also relate to internet "bubble" money/income
-- YMMV). I am not obsessed about it, but I occasionally try to point out
where someone might have an erroneous viewpoint about an item for
buy-sell-trade.
[In support of falling prices see:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1668585070 that's a
near mint #6286 Skull's Eye Schooner that sold for $160.00. I know it used
to go for a LOT more than that -- I have paid a lot more for it. You decide
what that means...]
Your complaint here reminds me of some other occasions on eBay when the
reissue of the Guarded Inn had prompted some sellers to try to cash in on
the ignorance of others by selling these sets as the original #6067 without
box or instructions or somesuch. It annoyed me, so I was contacting buyers
and pointing them in the direction of S@H online. Well, eBay put a stop to
that by threatening to interfere with my use of their service, so I stopped
trying to help those kinds of buyers. But I have to tell you that I still
feel perfectly justified in having done it. For more see:
http://news.lugnet.com/market/buy-sell-trade/?n=11848
BTW, how is my participation in this thread different than when I
participated in the following thread:
"Re: Mindstorms Dark Side Sets at $4.88 !?!?!"
http://news.lugnet.com/market/shopping/?n=8325
??? I would assert that in most cases I am just trying to help out other
AFOL get good deals. I could have scored all of the Dark Side sets in CA if
I had chosen to and then sold them to some guy in Australia at a profit of
some kind. But instead I actually called one friend about the sale,
discussed it online with another, and hopefully gave the further heads up to
other hopefuls (admittedly, on that occasion I did not start the thread, but
merely added my voice to it). Now, I'm a villian? If we can't help each
other out with useful information, what's the point? I hope this website
isn't just for the purpose of making money for some of you. I guess I would
merely hope for more, but your degree and manner of participation is up to you.
BTW, my involvement in this particular newsgroup is not limited to merely
carping about prices and pointing out sales to fellow AFOL. I have tried to
better communication between buyers and sellers by creating a Construction
Toy Grading Standards, available here: http://www.lugnet.com/~174/grading
Anyway, I am sorry if you find my manner of participation in lugnet
distracting or annoying, but basically I don't give a damn. I think others
value my participation just fine, and you can't please everyone all the
time. I am not perfect, but I do often try to be helpful.
Since you have felt quite free to question me about what I am doing here,
may I also inquire as to your manner of participation on Lugnet? What have
you contributed?
> Why don't you let the readers decide what they will buy, sell or trade?
They can do this de facto. No?
