Hi John!
I think you were very fair in offering to buy the set back. In fact, that's
what I would do too. You may not get the profit that you made from the set
in the first place but someone else WILL buy this set regardless if the box
is open or not. If all the pieces in the SEALED polybags, instructions,
catalogs, registration to a Lego club, etc. etc. are there it is considered
brand new. I just sold a set on eBay that was the exact same. The box had
been opened, but all bags and information was still in there. I would say
just buy it back, pay the shipping and sell it again. I guarantee that more
people are going to want the set so don't even waste your time with this guy.
