We
take and analyse data from ebay, by "complete" sets (no box, no instructions
are ok, as long as they're not missing any pieces) that are in the US (or
canada, or APO/FPO) and average them by set.. we only have about 3.5 months
worth of data (6 months we figured would be ideal as prices would change with
availability, discontinuation, and release, etc).  Anyway... eventually, we'd
like people to be able to enter in the set numbers for sets they own, and get
a
tally of what each set is "worth" and what the total collections' worth
also...
I don't know if this kind of information would be good enough for an insurance
agency... but i'd bet it wouldn't hurt :)

Wow, that sounds really cool!

If I can make a suggestion... if the results could also spit out a graph of
value vs time (ie, show when it sold for how much) for all data points, that
would be incredibly useful.  I bet you'd see definite cycles, where a bunch of
sales of a particular set on eBay in a short time drove down the price, then it
spikes back up after being absent for a while...

But more importantly it would allow you to see the highest and lowest prices,
and chart the most recent trend, up or down...  that would give you a really
clear idea of what you could expect from eBay.

Good luck!  I think this would be a really useful tool, and a great addition to
the community.

(...) yah, we plan to make it graph like that... as well as an all-time-low and an all-time-high... averages, StDev etc... Users will be able to put in a list of sets (that they have, or see in an auction) and it'll help them figure out what the lot (...) (25 years ago, 19-Mar-00, to lugnet.market.appraisal)
