(...) Rachel, Do they all say "LEGO" on the studs? Most of the 1949-56 Lego does not, 1957-present does. Thanks Gary, I also have 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8, without cylinders. The colour of the plastic is slightly different too. Perhaps the men go with the lego and it's all 1978? It's in excellent used condition, not even scratched. but I don't have any boxes (...) (20 years ago, 21-Nov-04, to lugnet.market.appraisal)

(...) OK, Here's a few helpful tips. If 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 pieces have NO tubes underneath, and they have slots on 2 of the sides of the bricks, they are from 1949-56. Thanks for telling me about bricklink, I'll have a look around there. I think that I may not have phrased my question clearly. I have some of the very first lego ever made. It is not regular lego. I recently purchased a heap of assorted lego at a garage sale... There is quite a lot of the old style lego, the stuff without the cylinders, in various colours. Amongst it is a 4.5V train set No 183 in excellent condition but to my surprise the usual "with 4.5V motor" sticker on the front is in Italian and the instructions (...)
