Found my first Alpha Team set today (in Columbus, OH, at the W. Broad
St. TRU). 6773 Alpha Team Helicopter. They had about ten of them on the
shelf. It was the only Alpha Team set they had out. Of course I bought
one :-) .

As of Wednesday night, the TRU on Broad also has added the Alpha Team
ATV/Sub set 6774, Ogel Command Striker 6771 and Ogel Command Center 6776.

I got a 6771 (and an old Stringrays set that was marked down from $30 to $10
- woo!).

My opinions of 6771:

The set is 28 pcs and isn't hard to put together, but I found myself
pressing up from underneath the skids/runners to attach the pieces to the
plate. Unfortunately for how I was holding it, it kept knocking the grey 2x6
plate off. I must have done this about 6 times before I gave up and finished
building it on a book. :)

Curiously, I found my instructions were misprinted. The steps were all
there, but steps 5 and 6 were backwards on the page - that is, Step 6 was on
the top of the page and step 5 was the second step on the page. All of the
other pages were in proper sequential order and location however. If
nothing, it's a bit amusing, but I've never seen this before in instructions.

Over all, it isn't a BAD set, but I can't help but feel a little cheated on
the originality front - it seems like it's little more than just a
variantion of the Extreme Team air boat 6567. It's not quite the same but
the similarities struck me as I was building the set.

The pieces in the set are pretty much all useful to me other than maybe the
bow-shaped plate that is the deck of the craft though I'll find a use for it
sooner or later. :)

Things that were highpoints to me:

- Black UFO armor!! This is probably the biggest reason I like this set and I
will be buying several more so that I can properly armor some barbarians for
my castle theme creations I have planned.
- Ogel's head is pretty nice, but I'm not sure I need more than 1.
- The unprinted black torso - especially nice if one wishes to make their own
stickers (as some have talked about recently).
- A trans-red radar dish. This is just cool. I don't have any trans-red bits
other than 1x1 round lights and 1x.3 tail lights and tiles and antennas.
- Red vanes like those on Anakin's pod racer - with more of these, they'll be
great for use on spacecraft engines.
- 2 of the new click-hinge based sockets like those on the smaller Movie Maker
sets. These are pretty neat but I haven't yet decided on how I'll use them.

My final impression - it's a somewhat decent parts pack, but at $4 for
28pcs.. I'd have to say you should want the specific pieces if you're
looking to get it unless you just wanna be Alpha Team complete for the year
when they're all out.

On another note - if one is looking for somewhat somewhat decent
discounts... last year somone in this group mentioned that Kohl's had LEGO
at a "permanent" %20 off. Apparently that's true because the Kohl's on West
Broad/Phillipi (just east of the TRU on W Broad) still has that discount - I
got a 2001 SW Tie Fighter set for %20 off. They have a nice selection of the
2001 SW sets (Watto's Junkyard, the Tie, Imperial Shuttle come to mind
specifically that I looked at) as well as LoM sets and a nice selection of
current/last year's sets.
I didn't look close enough to see if the sets were marked up any, but I
think they were with in $1-2 of TRU's prices for the most part. Certainly
better than the last time I went to Zany Brainy where the discount prices
were the same as TRU's every day prices. :)

(...) That was me who mentioned it last year. About six months or so ago, they stopped keeping the Lego on "permanent" discount and switched to a rotating sale (i.e., every few weeks, they'll put them on unadvertised discount for a week). The 20% (...) (23 years ago, 11-Mar-01, to lugnet.loc.us.oh.col)
