The O gauge layout they had set up (in my opinion) was rather poor.  I don't
belive that it made any grade changes whatsoever, along with no track loops,
ect.  It was just two parallel tracks.  Also, the tables were set up at a
normal model RR hight (sp?), with is usually set up to adult hight.

Agreed

I guess the next step is to figure out what type of layout we want to build,
(i.e., modular, or not), size, scale (6 or 8 stud wide, ect), and if we want • to
have a raised layout (like 25 bricks above the table), or build the tables to
reflect the part of the layout that will/is built.

A small list of what I would argue for :)

GMLTC type modules
2 ft high tables
25 brick basehight above that (approx 10in)
(this would put the main part of the table at 3 ft, just enough
for most kids to see it pretty well)
2 lg grey plates deep  (this can be changed per module, but it will be a
obscene amount of bricks as it is.  most likely most of the
modules would be at least 1 regular plate wider than this)
4 lg grey plates long  (as a standard, ie, modules could be 4,8,12,ect long)
8 wide clearances on the layout  (it dosn't matter to me if we build
6 or 8 wide stock, but it would be a large chore to change this
later if we need to/want to)

I like this idea a lot it would promote the layout better at a 3-foot height.
PNLTC has this to say about tables with directions on how to build,
http://www.pnltc.org/Modular_Table.html . They mention a table holding 9 32 x
32 baseplates witch is the same as 4 lg. Baseplates, but I like your idea of a
longer modular table better. And I don’t think it makes much difference as to
6 or 8 studs I think it would only make a difference as to what you are
building.

Andrew Reynolds

The only real difference is clearances on tunnels and that sort of thing.  (no
point in tearing up a whole section to move a row of bricks by one stud.

I havn't looked at that table page in awhile, I guess I need to take a look at
it again.  My only concern is if they will be sturdy enough to support as many
bricks as we are talking about putting on them.  (I have a real bad tendancy to
overbuild anything that can be overbuilt).
