PS Did you find out anything more about those clone pirate ships with
quarter hull pieces which we saw in Melbourne? Were they "compatible with
the leading brand"?

Compatible enough methinks.  Issue was more one of cost (believe it or not).

At Port Block, we build ships, great big ships.  If we want little ships,
Lego's 12 wide hulls are entirely fine.  If we want big ships, the 16 wides
are great.  If we want great big ships, the 16 wides get a bit cramped.  We
can build out to 18 wide fairly attractively, but beyond that, not geat
opportunity.

Hull pieces split down the long axis would enable a variable width build.
Aha!  24 wide hulls!  Cool enough, but at 24 wide, you'd probably want 48
studs worth of centre sections. The clone centre sections are 6 long, and
there's only one set in each box, so I'd need eight sets, which at $25 per
is $200.

Hmmmm.  An astute fossicker for things old and new might score a BSB in
adequate condition for that....

Still baldly going...

(...) Yes, the stern pieces are the tricky ones. Even if one does succeed in cutting straight down the middle, you'll be effectictively left with two half width keels (is it still the keel that far back & up), which you could space out with bricks, (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jul-01, to lugnet.loc.au)
