It seems you lose no matter which way you go.
If you import large collections, then it becomes worth Custom's trouble to
pursue you for the duties and GST payable.
If you import small collections, then postage/shipping becomes a large
proportion of the cost.
I'm assuming that Customs are still not bothering to pursue small amounts of
duties/GST just as they did with pre-GST sales tax. The don't-bother limit
used to be $50 (of tax) which back then equated to purchases of about $180 .
So what is happening now? It looks like taxes are coming out at 15%. If they
are still using $50 as the limit for not bothering, that suggests goods
under about $333 will avoid the tax on the way in.
What data do we have to confirm or deny it? Mel's purchases would have been
over the limits above and she was pursued. What about you, Ross? Others?
