Assume they dont want lists of individual parts, is there another sutable
way to come up with a $ value for the parts?
I guess that $ values for individual parts would be a good idea for the
"hard to find" parts (like the classic space printed 1 x 6 x 5 bricks and
the red round shields and stuff) then $ values for all the sets I have
instructions for... Then come up with some other $ value for whats left...

How good's your memory?

How about making a list of all the sets you've acquired over the years (don't do
it in one hit, take a few days), making a note of the set number and number of
pieces. See what you can come up with. (No need to build them).

Have a look at the bricklink values for those sets.

See if that list and the value would be enough compensation if you lost your
*entire* collection (which is not real likely - it's really going to take a
fire, or a thief with a ute...).

Think about what you would claim (and how you would substantiate it) if you had
a partial loss. And what the chances of sustaining a partial loss are.

I know if I used bricklink values for my collection I'd have far, far in excess
of what I paid for it, and far, far in excess of the cost of what I would
*realistically* replace it with.  But then, I value the pieces, not the set (and
even then, for their utility, not their rarity).

My suspicion would be, if you value your collection in terms of the
collectibility of the sets you own, then you would already have a fairly
detailed list.

Cheers

PS If you do manage to list all your sets, then you can calculate the average!

ok, what I will do is to make a list of all the sets I have instructions for along with sutable average bricklink prices for same. And a list of the "rare"/"unusual" parts in my collection (anything that would be hard to find again if my collection (...) (20 years ago, 21-Jan-05, to lugnet.loc.au)
