Ben,

I have already received interest via email, from not just some Aussie but also
overseas...

I personally have always wanted to see something like this in Australia.

Considering the growing interest, it seem like a good idea to start a thread for
planning this event.

Probably the most important considerations are:

1) Where will it be held, and/or which group will host it?

I personally think Sydney... means us Brisbaners can get down easily and
Melbourners up too... (kinda half way for a majority of us).  I think Sydney
would have a few good places for venues? maybe?  I also think it would be one of
the places that would attract anyone coming from overseas (and cheaper for them
if flying directly into Sydney)... if they were to come along... all the City
Icons etc...

2) When will it be held.

I'd say given it takes such a long time to organise such a thing, sometime next
year forsure and perferably in school holidays or maybe not?  I guess schools
could always come along on a class visit or hold a display of their own (means
more people are attending in different LEGO events etc).

3) Should we have some group to organise the event?

Yes, I think there should be some commitee type thing.  Of course we don't have
to organise it in person, but maybe meeting somewhere on some chat thing like
MSN from time to time to discuss ideas etc would be handy and not as expensive.

Having put forward these question, I'll provide my response, and invite any
other interested parties to add their two bob.

I think it would be cool to have a co-organiser representing their regions...
such as someone in Brisbane, Melboure, Adelaide, Sydney and so on...  Even if
enough people in the US (for example) wanted to come along, someone over there
could work that one out... this could involve bring ideas, getting together,
working on getting down together and putting in our part of the show, working
and talking to those who we know personally to either come along and present
something, or writing to certain people regarding ideas and help etc.

I know a few people I wouldn't mind asking to help in some shape or form, and if
they can't caome along, then I'm sure there are ways of them still sending stuff
for us to display or sell on behalf etc...

I even thought about sponsorship for it, with certain companies...

My suggestions:

1) Location: Melbourne.
Reason: The Melbourne group seem to be having the most frequent meetings, and
have access to 2 smaller venues, along with possible access to larger ones
[think back to the NSW/VIC queens birthday meeting]. In addition to this, we
have good weather, reasonable public transport, and some retailers who may be
interested in joining in.
Also, it's less travel for me :)

But further travel for us :P

2) Depends on location...I would suggest during the school holidays for
whichever state selected (hopefully during school holidays for others as well.
Of course, if in Melbourne, during one of our sporting events could help entice
AFOL's from overseas to come along...Aus open tennis, F1 GP, or even the 2006
Commonwealth games...and before anyone says something, I relaise that's not
going to be in 2005 :)

Ya got that right! ;)

3) I'd suggest one member from each state group, along with a couple of extras
from the host state. These people could be responsible for their own states
advertising/organisation, contacting LA, getting sponsors (if required/wanted),
organising accomodation/transport, planning dispays/competitions, etc.

Pretty much what I said above (reading as I go along here).

Of course, this is just my thoughts...So come on and make your own thoughts
known so we can take it from a wish to a reality.

Of course... what do you think I have been saying in previous posts???

Don't "just imagine"!

[Leg'Oz 2005 for Melbourne :) ]

Mel

But not for MELbourne (as a beautiful city it is). And I don't think it should
be called Leg'Oz... sounds like a bunch of Aussie Legs on display, 2005 of them
;)...

(...) <massive cut> I have just received an email from a lovely Japanese AFOL who would love to go to Sydney next year to a LEGO-expo type thing :) Looking good! Mel :D (21 years ago, 29-Feb-04, to lugnet.loc.au)

(...) Sydney is more expensive... at least if you're paying for conference space (or even if you're just paying for accomodation). But yes, it wins on the icon count ;-) (...) Brickfest Downunder has a certain catchiness to it... ;-) Cheers Richie (...) (21 years ago, 1-Mar-04, to lugnet.loc.au, FTX)
